ISIS Killing Rooms Of Mosul Are Filled With Bodies And Mystery
MOSUL, Iraq — In March, VICE returned to Mosul for the first time since the war against ISIS was declared over eight months ago.
While life may be returning to normal in the eastern half of the city, on the other side of the river — where the fighting was most intense — the scale of rebuilding that needs to be done is monumental. It’s estimated there are still 8 million tons of conflict debris that need to be moved before reconstruction can start, equivalent to three times the size of the Great Pyramid of Egypt. About 75 percent of that rubble is in West Mosul, and it’s mixed with so much unexploded ordnance that experts say this is now one of the most contaminated spots on the planet.
In the Old City, where ISIS made its last stand, residents have slowly started to come back – a few bus...

In the Old City, where ISIS made its last stand, residents have slowly started to come back – a few business owners hoping to repair shops, and families who have no other option but to live in their damaged homes. Some water tanks have been trucked in, and electricity cables have been temporarily patched together along some streets, but the place feels deserted, and in some ways the scene was not that different from how it looked shortly after the fighting.

CAPTION: As the U.S. body count in Iraq for October reached 100, a bomb exploded in a Baghdad neighborhood, killing at least 31 Shiite job seekers. ( Oct. 30)
----------------------------------------
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
(Various from Iraq Blast 2)
The victims this time were men who simply wanted jobs. They had woken up early to join a line for day laborers at a market in Baghdad's sprawling Sadr City neighborhood. Just after sunrise, next to food stalls and kiosks, a bomb exploded. It killed at least 30 people and wounded more than 50.
Most of the victims were Shiites, as is most of the surrounding neighborhood.
The U-S military still has Sadr City under a tight cordon as part of its search for a Shiite death squad commander. The week of U-S roadblocks and checkpoints had appeared to help dampen the violence here, until today.
(something with U.S. troops -- maybe the video from yesterday)
The bombing comes on the same day the U-S announced the death of the hundredth U-S servicemember this month.
The news came without any fanfare -- it was a Marine who died fighting Sunni insurgents in Iraq's vast Anbar province.
Since the war began, the death toll has only been higher in three other months -- the last time it was any higher than this was almost two years ago, in January 2005.
The military attributes it to a surge in violence during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which just ended, and an ongoing operation here in Baghdad to clear insurgents.
(standup)
News about the death toll comes at a particularly sensitive time for the Americans, not just because of the upcoming midterm elections. The Iraqi prime minister is putting pressure on the U-S to let him take control sooner of his country's security forces, and this high death toll could certainly be a factor in those discussions.
